Swim Safety
Cool off safely with Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks! As you head for the pools this summer, remember that swimming accidents can happen quickly. So before you “take a dip,” get the facts on how to keep yourself and loved ones safe and healthy. Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks recommends the following safety tips:
- Swim in the presence of a lifeguard
- Never swim alone
- Don't swim in unknown waterways or use fire hydrants to cool off
- Look for, read, and obey all pool safety signs and symbols
- Parents, guardians, or caregivers should supervise children closely, even when lifeguards are present
- Alcohol and swimming don't mix
- Protect your head
- Feet first into the pool
- If you are in trouble, call or wave for help
- Follow regulations and lifeguard directions
- Report hazardous conditions to lifeguards
- Know your swimming ability
- If In Doubt, Just Stay Out!
- Work with a swimming instructor to improve skills and comfort level
Rules and Regulations Governing Conduct of Use of Pool
Permission to use the pool may be revoked at any time for infractions of the rules and regulations as stated.
Swimming and water activity are only permitted when a Lifeguard is on duty.
All rules serve to keep patrons and staff safe at all times in the aquatic environment.
- Always Obey and Respect the Pool Staff.
- All swimmers must shower before entering the pool area.
- Appropriate swim attire is required (Bathing suits must have liners. No cut-offs, board shorts, basketball shorts, or cotton shirts are permitted). No street clothes on deck.
- Individuals with open sores, lesions, skin infections/rashes, or bandages will not be allowed to use the pool.
- All Non-bathroom-trained swimmers MUST wear approved swim diapers.
- Food, chewing gum, and drinks are not allowed on the pool deck.
- Profanity or vulgar language is not acceptable in the pool area. Running, pushing, hazardous play, and spitting in the pool/pool gutter/deck is prohibited.
- No floatation devices are allowed in the pool unless used under the supervision of staff during structured programs.
- Those under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be allowed in the pool area.
- Only persons who can demonstrate their swimming ability to staff will be permitted to swim in deep water. (A deep water test may be administered)
- Swimmers must be at least 3 feet 9 inches tall to be permitted in the recreation pool unless able to pass a water swim test. Wading pools are available for those not meeting the height requirement in most cases.
- Those 13 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21 with I.D.at all times within the facility.
